Project 2025: The Epitome of Hypocrisy (Part Two)
As of this writing, the good news is that more and more people are becoming aware of the content within Project 2025. There are even efforts to translate it into Spanish and get it out to the Hispanic community who need to know what is happening.
The bad news is that Project 2025 is just the tip of the iceberg in the GOPs plan to remake America into their defined image. There is a great article in the New Yorker (7/22/24) by Jonathan Blitzer, “Inside the Trump Plan for 2025”, that goes into detail about the other workings by Republicans.
But let us look at the first pillar of Project 2025 which is to “Restore the family as the centerpiece of American life and protect our children.”
The first line of the discussion is “The next conservative President must get to work pursuing the true priority of politics—the well-being of the American family.”
I am not sure where this idea comes from but I always thought the true priority of politics was to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the well being of every American.
To try and make their point they begin by citing the fact that the American family is in crisis. It might be if you accept their definition of a family- father, mother, children. This leaves out single women or men, gay couples, widows or widowers, couples who have decided not to have children, just to name a few.
They make the point that forty percent of children are born to single mothers, sixty percent of black children. While these statistics are accurate, the point they then try to make is not. They go on to say that “Fatherlessness is one of the principal sources of American poverty, crime, mental illness, teen suicide, substance abuse, rejection of the church, and high school dropouts.” Again this is true but what about the other principal sources. Homes with domestic violence, alcoholism, substance abuse, from fathers.
Out of one side of their mouth they say the government cannot fix the family, but then they want the government to fix the family. Like work requirements for food stamps. What? Did I miss something? What do food stamps have to do with family?
Under the umbrella of protecting our children they then list restoring parental authority in schools, elimination of pornography, eliminating critical race theory and gender identity, and of course eliminating abortion.
They believe schools serve parents. No, schools serve students by educating them and preparing them for life. Teaching diversity, compassion, understanding of different cultures and ideas is not subversive, it is preparation for the world we live in. Teaching the truth of the nation’s history is not anti-American but necessary for the future of America.
No one wants children to be exposed to pornography. One of the problems is who defines what is pornographic. The extreme right act as if anything relating to sex is pornographic. The idea of sex education in schools must be horrific to them.
As for abortion, the GOP is gloating over the reversal of Roe vs. Wade and is on the warpath to get it eliminated altogether in every state. But they do not want to stop there. They want to restrict dramatically the use and availability of the abortion pill and eliminate the possibility of mail order.
Couched in the rhetoric of protecting the family and our children are more government interference into the lives of Americans. Decisions that should be left to the parents and individuals are, under their plan, threatened and regulated if not in agreement with the GOP agenda.
